Summer Class Lineup

With July approaching (tomorrow!) I thought I would toss up some descriptions of upcoming summer classes I'll be teaching for anyone that may be wandering over here from my website.

[Toddlers painted "bubbles" earlier in June by dripping watery tempera on large cotton paper circles. We, of course, also mixed our own bubble solution and spent the morning chasing bubbles!]

June has been mostly sunny during the Portland season of "sprummer" (as opposed to our other season, "rainy"), which has meant many of my regular classes (Tuesday Toddler Art Time at Mississippi Treehouse, 10:30 - 11:15) and Green Bean Hundred-Year Art Adventure (Wednesday, 1:30-2:30, Green Bean Books) have been outdoors.

[One page in an Exquisite Corpse Book recently completed at Green Bean. This "Unicorn Fish" is just one of the silly animals created after we drew, traded, and flipped our pages]

Here's where to find me for the rest of the summer:

• Toddler classes continue through August, as do Big Kid Classes (a new 11:00 a.m. Wednesday morning art/science installation for ages 4-6) at Mississippi Treehouse.

• Five through eleven year olds are welcome to sign up for the three more book making classes offered at Green Bean as we make books and study contemporary genres of art. We've already made Exquisite Corpse Books as we took a peek at Surrealism, and collage books as we studied Dada. Next week we're looking forward to sun as we make splatter paintings like Jacson Pollock, drip paintings like Max Ernst, and other types of action painting as we made Meander Books! Pop Art and Installation Art top off the weeks ahead.

Jul 25-28 holds a Bookmaking MINI-CAMP at Green Bean Books, where children six through eleven are invited to come to Green Bean from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m. daily, M-Th for some more in-depth bookmaking projects culminating in a Last Thursday art opening of all of their creations at the Alberta Street Book Store! A few spots are left for young bibliophiles and artists.

• Not around in July? A Bookmaking MINI-CAMP will be offered for PDX children "up the hill" in the Cedar Mill Area (next to the Cedar Mill Library) from August 1-4. Contact me for details.

Today I sealed, scanned, and uploaded to my website a series of paintings I have been working on. All 8" x 8," acrylic on panel. Enjoy!

First Thursday and Website Launch!

Tomorrow, I get to participate in First Thursday, a monthly event in Portland's Pearl filled with art, new shows opening at galleries, open studios, specials at restaurants, street performers, and terrible parking.

A shop on NW 14h and Irving, the PosterGarden, has a gallery space and will be showing local artists as well as offering a wine tasting of the limited edition Rose Festival wine by Oak Knoll--the label I designed.

[Oak Knoll's Pinot Gris, boasting my label design. Available here.]

So I get to hang out during the opening, show off my label, and sign bottles that are purchased. I also get to have a table to show my own art. I'll be displaying a few paintings and books, and advertising my children's bookmaking classes.

I'm nearly out of my mini business cards, so I printed some impromptu cards of my own for the event:

They show off my ::drumroll:: just launched website,! Finally! I purchased the domain of my own name (surprisingly, it wasn't taken. Yes, there are hundreds of Sarah Fagans out there) around five years ago for when I was ready to have a professional site, and recently got around to creating content.

So check out the site! And swing by NW 14th and Irving between 6 and 9 p.m. if you're in the Pearl tomorrow; I'll be at my own little slice of First Thursday!
