It's On: Books from Around the World

It's official! I will be teaching a set of six bookmaking classes at Green Bean Books on Alberta St. this fall for Portland area kindergardeners and first graders. Classes start September 23 and continue every other Thursday through December 2.

The theme? Bookmaking from around the world! We'll explore ancient and contemporary storytelling structures hailing from six continents. From palm leaf books to Ethiopian wishing scrolls, our creations may challenge our ideas of what a book can be--but help us realize that storytelling, and bookmaking, are practices that link us all.

Here's a sneak peek at our take on the palm leaf book, a structure that has been used for centuries in several Southeast Asian and Pacific Rim areas from Tibet to Indonesia. Traditionally, the books contain spiritual passages, poems, mantras, and sacred writings--matters of calm importance. We'll fill ours with images and words of import in our own lives.
